Firm’s Holiday Giving Campaign to Bring Safe Drinking Water to Families in Sudan
WESTPORT, Conn. – Save the Children announced today a charitable donation by Revel Consulting to its LifeStraw® Clean Water Project in Sudan. Revel, a Kirkland, Washington based business and business management consulting firm is focusing its holiday giving campaign on the project aimed at bringing clean drinking water to thousands of children and families in the war torn African country.
“In these tough economic times, we knew that non-profit organizations are facing challenges raising important funds needed to continue their missions,” said Vikas Kamran, CEO of Revel. “We believe that these organizations must have the continued support of the business community, so we decided to step up and help.”
Revel’s financial contribution will help Save the Children provide LifeStraw® Family point-of-use water filters to families living in the Upper Nile State of Southern Sudan, where Save the Children has existing health programs and staff on the ground. The project will target approximately 3,200 households in Sudan, which includes more than 19,000 people of which more than 4,000 are children under the age of 5.
“The impact of this donation will be far-reaching,” said Charlie MacCormack, Save the Children’s President and CEO. “Our programs serve families in some of the poorest, most remote communities in Sudan, where often the only water supply for miles may be contaminated. Water-born diseases keep children from attending school and can be life-threatening to infants and toddlers.”
The LifeStraw® Family, a product of Swiss manufacturer Vestergaard Frandsen, filters a minimum of 18,000 liters (approximately 4,755 gallons), enough to provide safe drinking water for a family for up to three years while removing a minimum of 99 % of all bacteria, viruses, and parasites. The product purifies water to US EPA standards and is very user-friendly, operating without the need for batteries, electricity or spare parts.

The LifeStraw® Clean Water Project will commence in 2009 as a pilot project for the first year and a half. After this initial test period, Save the Children will conduct surveys and field tests on the families’ use of the filters and the health impacts of the LifeStraw® products in order to evaluate further program expansion.
